New Panzura Detect and Rescue provides near real-time ransomware detection and guided recovery

According to leading cyber-security underwriter Corvus Insurance, ransomware attacks surged by 69% in 2023.

It was another record year for ransomware infection, despite better ransomware detection methods and law enforcement efforts to stop some ransomware groups.

Sophos revealed a similar trend. Nearly two-thirds of the 3,000 IT and cybersecurity leaders who took part in their 2023 vendor-agnostic survey said their organizations had been hit by ransomware in the previous year.

The damage is staggering. A report by Cybereason found that 84% of businesses hit by ransomware in 2023 chose to pay the ransom. Their ebook uncovers the experiences of 1,008 IT professionals in charge of cybersecurity. It shows that 46% of them reported business damage costs between $1-10 million from cyber attacks. Another 16% said the cost was over $10 million.

Even the best data protection isn’t complete protection.

Ransomware can be stealthy and subversive. Your business could be under attack as you read this, and you wouldn’t even know it.

As with any infection, the damage grows with every minute ransomware goes undetected, undiagnosed, and untreated.

Low-and-slow ransomware attacks, which spread subtly over a period of time, are on the rise. Cybereason’s research shows more than half (56%) of organizations fail to detect ransomware quickly, with threats often going undiscovered on their network for between three and 12 months.

By then, a significant amount of critical data is compromised, which can make recovery a painfully slow and expensive process. Organizations that lack immutable data and read-only snapshots that enable a sub-60 second recovery point objective (RPO) — relying on backups instead — face the specter of data loss or datasets they cannot completely decrypt. Worse yet, sensitive data including personally identifiable information (PII) may have been exfiltrated ready for publication if a ransom isn’t paid.

Early ransomware detection is critical

Even when data can be recovered, the time it takes to restore clean files can put a serious dent in business productivity, revenues, and reputation.

Organizations using CloudFS — a global file system that makes data immutable — can already effectively shrug off ransomware by reverting back to pristine files without losing data. They can already achieve that data restoration with a recovery time objective (RTO) of a fraction of the time it takes to restore from other less resilient options.

With a current industry average ransomware recovery time of 21 days, it’s easy to see how vital immutable data and read-only snapshots are to data resilience — your timely ability to recover data even when maliciously attacked.

However, less damage done means even faster recovery, less disruption, and therefore far less cost.

Panzura Detect and Rescue enables ransomware detection in near real-time — even of brand new ransomware variants — empowering Panzura customers with a whole new level of data resilience. This means they can more actively protect their data and maintain their productivity. In fact, they can slash total ransomware recovery time down to just hours.

Powerful AI-infused detection software actively monitors suspicious user behavior and data patterns. These trigger automated alerts to infrastructure and IT admins within minutes that can speed up intervention so that risks can be contained and neutralized, or remedial action can be taken.

While it has a vast database of known ransomware signatures, Detect and Rescue is not just looking for variants it can recognize. Instead, it scans your unique file environment to learn your normal file patterns and user behavior. This means it’s not alerting on behavior that’s out of baseline for another organization but perfectly normal for you. Instead, it’s constantly refining its ability to detect attacks on your file infrastructure, with a very high degree of accuracy and confidence.

Combined with the immutable storage provided by Panzura CloudFS, it enables businesses to evolve to a level of dynamic, active protection that puts their most valuable asset — their data — first and foremost.

“While governments, law enforcement, and regulators continue to grapple with ransomware issues such as transparency and oversight of cryptocurrencies, companies need to ensure they remain resilient by focusing on ransomware prevention, preparation, response, and recovery strategies.” -McKinsey Research

To date, no business using CloudFS that has followed Panzura’s best practice guidelines has lost their data due to ransomware — and Panzura Detect and Rescue aims to ensure that remains the case.

“Actions that support, govern, identify, protect, and detect should all happen continuously, and actions that support respond and recover should be ready at all times and happen when cybersecurity incidents occur.” - NIST

The launch of Panzura Detect and Rescue is timely. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has just released NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0, a detailed blueprint designed to help organizations increase their data resilience and improve their cybersecurity posture. The fourth tier of CSF 2.0 focuses on adaptability, and recommends that organizations “use real-time or near real-time information to understand and consistently act upon cybersecurity risks.” In other words, they must take an “active defense” approach to cybersecurity and malware detection.

Peace of mind for infrastructure and operations leaders

Panzura Detect and Rescue gives you:

  • Rapid detection in as little as two minutes:Panzura’s detection technology tracks the entire CloudFS file system for suspicious activity and footprints that may signal a ransomware attack.
  • Tailored protection: Every organization’s file usage patterns are unique, so our AI-infused algorithms are designed to learn what “normal” looks like for you so that any anomalies can be detected quickly.
  • Near-instant notifications: If a pattern is detected that could signal an attack, IT admins will receive near-real-time alerts, allowing them to investigate and stop possible attacks quickly.
  • Expert-guided recovery when you need it: In the event of a breach, you’ll get expert guidance and assistance for complete peace of mind.

The time to evolve from reactive to active defense is now. Don’t let your organization fall victim to the rising threat of ransomware. Ask to see Panzura Detect and Rescue in action today.

Detect and Rescue is part of the Panzura Data Management Platform, which provides efficient, high performance global file access, storage visibility, streamlined sharing, and cost control for on-premises, cloud and hybrid-cloud environments, all while safeguarding against catastrophic file data loss.
