Q: Rich – tell us about your background, before you joined Panzura?
A: I’ve held various executive roles in Product Management and Operations previous to Panzura in wireless and networking technology startup companies. I love startups and started doing them while I was still in high school. There is something satisfying about taking something from an idea to a shipping product that fundamentally changes the way people do business.
Q: When did you join Panzura and what was the one thing that told you this company was for you?
A: I joined Panzura in April of 2009 excited to create something new. It was early and we didn’t have a product yet. So for me it was all about the people. I had either worked with or knew most of the founding engineers. The company was founded with a talented group of innovators and the prospect of being able to create something new and game changing with them was exciting and that’s exactly what we did.
Q: What do you think sets Panzura apart from its competitors?
A: At Panzura we set out from the very beginning to solve some really hard problems. We wanted to make it possible for companies to have one solution that put all its file data at the fingertips of its users and applications around the globe. We did that using available public and private cloud services and a lot of software to secure it all, make it efficient, reduce complexity and cost while delivering the fastest global file system ever. Since we targeted solving these problems from the beginning and not as an afterthought we have an architecture purpose built for what it does.
Q: What do customers say about Panzura?
A:I’ve talked to a lot of customers over the years and have logged a lot of miles in the air doing it. There is one thing that I’ve heard from many customers, even those early customers who helped push the product to be what it is today. I’ve had customers approach me at shows or after visits and say that choosing Panzura was the best technology decision of their careers because it fundamentally changed the way they did business in a positive and productive way. Comments like that are what have kept me engaged and committed over the years.
Q: How does Panzura fit into the future of cloud technology?
A: Panzura had integrated cloud technology within its core architecture before companies had plans or budgets to go to the cloud. As such, Panzura has developed a long heritage of cloud expertise in its technologies and innovators. We have combined storage, networking, security, WAN optimization and cloud technologies together in a way that allows customers to easily use those cloud services with their existing applications. This has and continues to make it simple for companies to move to the cloud while providing the extensibility to adopt new and emerging technology in an extremely dynamic cloud based ecosystem.
Q: What achievement are you most proud of in your time here so far?
A: That is simple; delivering on the ideas we initially had as a finished product to the market in a way that has changed the way companies do business today. I’m as excited with a new customer that adopts our technology today as I was with the first one in the beginning and we still have so many more plans to deliver on.
Q: What’s your superpower?
A:I would have to say versatility. Looking back over my career and time at Panzura I’ve been responsible for so many different aspects of this company and others from Operations to IT, Marketing, Development and Product Management. There is something to be said for walking a mile in another’s shoes and I’ve worn a lot of shoes. This however gives me the breadth of knowledge and experience to see a bigger picture and hopefully go to where the future is headed rather than simply where we are today.
Q: Tell us a bit about Rich Weber the person.
A:Work is an important part of my life and I’ve had the great pleasure of working in Silicon Valley at startups like Panzura. This provides a great deal of creative satisfaction and sense of accomplishment for me. My family and two daughters are the loves of my life for whom I would die for without hesitation. Watching your kids grow up is like getting to live all over again only through their eyes and with a lot more anxiety. For fun I love to ride my motorcycle with my daughters or travel with my family and friends. I enjoy a mix of tropical relaxation, new exploration, discovery and sport when time allows. I try always to remember that we all live just once and there are no do-overs.
